What is therapeutic ultrasound?
Therapeutic ultrasound delivers sound energy to soft tissues. We use it selectively — never as the only treatment.
Wondering if this fits your problem? A short assessment tells us exactly what your plan should include.

“Therapeutic Ultrasound” isn’t one single move — here’s what it can include:
Continuous ultrasound
Steady sound-wave delivery, occasionally used for tissue heating effects in selected chronic presentations.
Pulsed ultrasound
Intermittent delivery favoured in more acute or sensitive soft-tissue presentations.
How it helps
- May support comfort in selected soft-tissue irritations
- Paired with manual therapy and exercise
- Clinic-based modality
Benefits
- May support comfort in specific tendon and soft-tissue irritations
- Non-invasive, painless application
- Used alongside — never instead of — manual therapy and exercise
What to expect in a session
Here’s the general flow — your physiotherapist will adapt it to your condition and stage of recovery:
Assessment check
Your physiotherapist confirms ultrasound is appropriate for the specific tissue and stage of your condition.
Gel application
Conductive gel is applied to the treatment area to allow the ultrasound head to move smoothly.
Application
The ultrasound head is moved continuously over the area for a short, timed duration.
Follow-on treatment
The session continues into manual therapy or exercise while tissue tolerance is favourable.
When we use it
Selected tendon and soft-tissue presentations after clinical assessment.
Who this typically suits
- Selected tendon-related presentations like tennis elbow or plantar fasciitis
- Specific soft-tissue irritations identified on assessment
Precautions & who should be cautious
- Avoided over cancerous tissue, active infection, or growth plates in children
- Avoided directly over the pregnant abdomen
- Not used as a first-line or sole treatment

Frequently asked questions
Is ultrasound therapy proven to work?
Evidence is mixed and effect sizes are modest; we use it selectively as a minor adjunct, never as your main treatment.
Does ultrasound therapy hurt?
No — it’s a painless application, typically just a cool or neutral sensation from the gel.
Treatments are selected after assessment. Not every modality suits every person — your physiotherapist will explain options and take consent.
